Along the boardwalk to the beach.

img_1649Another painting in Bideford Black paint with some added sgraffito, picture size 610 x 440mm on Bockingford paper.  This was painted after a visit to Crow Point in North Devon.  After driving along a toll road you park and walk along this boardwalk to the point where you usually get the beach to yourself.  This beach gives you wonderful views of Instow, Appledore and Westward Ho due to its position at the entrance to both Torridge and Taw Estuaries.  Spend many happy times here building driftwood fires and watching the sunsets.  Al

Linhay on the marsh.

img_1596

Linhay on the marsh, painted on 250lb Bockingford paper, 700 x 440mm.  For my black and white paintings I use my own prepared Bideford Black paint from a local pigment seam and have painted on of my favourite scenes from the Braunton Marsh.  Sadly the marsh is under ecological danger from encroaching salt water due to a breached tidal bank.  Hopefully this will be repaired before irreparable damage occurs.  Al

Above are the earlier stages with the use of masking fluid to keep areas clear of the layers of paint prior to finishing.  The photograph of me working is by Adrian Beasley, check out his landscape photography online.  Below is an earlier painting of this Linhay.

Rising Tide At Fremington Quay.

Watercolour painting of Fremington Quay in North Devon, England. A day of my first fishing trip with my son Archie aged 14. It’s safe to say that not a single creature was hurt in the making of this day. This is painted using my own prepared Bideford Black a pigment found on the North Devon Coast. This was not a drawn out affair as I’m trying to free up and freshen my work. Dimensions are 340mm x 480mm on handmade paper.

Cobbaton nr Codden Hill.

13072629_10156866824910717_8606620046189305823_oA picture taken last year on the small roads in North Devon.  Loved this tree and the water highlighting the road ahead.  I think perhaps the use of some more Bideford Black will be in order.  Al

A quick preparatory sketch exploring the tones and contrasts.  It took about 45 mins using charcoal, Bideford Black, pastel & titanium white.  Also a little scraping with a surgical scalpel.

A boy and a puddle; a journey in wellies.

img_2973

A study in my own Bideford Black of a friend’s picture of her son.  Entitled A boy and a puddle: a journey in wellies.  Loved the composition a little like a previous picture of mine of a boy on Camden Lock in the 70s, also on this webpage.  Overall this painting took about an hour and a half still trying to achieve a more spontaneous kind of composition so every study I do at the moment has to be time constrained.  Just trying to escape my illustrator/draughtsman training and background.  Al

Surfing Before The Storm.

dsc00835An odd thing happened with regard this painting.  I saw it on an old friend’s website who teaches surfing in North Devon and liked it so much I asked if I could paint it.  I asked if it was his photo he said it was and I completed this picture in my own Bideford Black Pigment.  Later I had a message from the actual surf photographer who took the picture.  He is  a local surf photographer called Rob Tibbles (check out his pictures they’re awesome).  A bit red faced I explained what happened and he was quite a chap about it.  All the same I withdrew this picture from my site because I hadn’t asked the right person permission in the beginning.  Rob liked the picture and said he didn’t mind if I kept it but for me that was not good.  Hence this is no longer for sale just in a dusty drawer in my studio.  The original photo was entitled Puff The Magic Dragon, hence the sky!  By the way check out the original photo my picture certainly doesn’t do justice to it.  AL
