This painting is inspired by a walk around the Lizard Peninsula from Church Cove around the Lizard to Kynance. It was quite an overcast day and when I arrived at Kynance Cove I walked along the quiet beach admiring the wonderful view. Immediately a massive rainstorm approached and I took cover from the rain in one of the caves there. When the storm had passed over out came the sunshine and the beach was illuminated with an earie neon light. Looking out along the coast this storm had already engulfed The Lizard in it’s dark focused cloud. Oddly it looked somewhat like an atomic bomb explosion, I was taken by how the white of the water’s edge looked against the dark foreboding background. This image was originally taken on my mobile phone, and now an acrylic on 900 x 600mm canvas.
Whilst walking around Croyde and Saunton searching for a little artistic inspiration I noticed fire tenders from RAF Chivenor on Saunton Beach. On enquiry I discovered that a Hercules C130J was going to practise take off and landings. After a few cups of tea and then venturing down the beach I witnessed the wonderful spectacle of a Hercules undergoing Tactical Operations. A painting of a wave made in the beautiful weather we’re having at the moment. I decided to produce a timed study to try and loosen up my work. Hassled by horseflies and heat I came up with a partially successful composition. Sadly I decided to make a few adjustments a few days later and managed to lose the spontaneity and freshness. It was discarded, the canvas broken and thrown away. You win some you lose some and you learn! It’s all part of the stressful and creative process that people don’t consider when they purchase your work. Al
A Sunday spent on Woolacombe Beach and as the sky changed colour the humidity seemed to rise and there became a closeness. As the sky became dark the sunlight shone through the waves and illuminated them from within. Taken on my pocket camera and later finished in the studio. Acrylic on watercolour paper 470 x 620mm.
